Microsoft’s Xbox division has unveiled a notable new capability for its console players, introducing a system that allows for the conversion of physical game discs into digital licenses. This upcoming feature is set to support titles from both the Xbox One and Xbox Series X generations, offering a pathway for gamers to digitize their existing disc-based collections.
Further details regarding this innovation were recently discussed by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma in an interview with the BBC. Sharma revealed that the disc-to-digital service will launch with initial support for 1,000 games spanning both Xbox One and Series X platforms. A significant clarification from the interview concerned the handling of digital rights: the digital license will reportedly remain associated with the physical disc. This design suggests that the digital rights for a game will transfer with the physical disc, impacting how these physical copies might be resold or passed on to new owners.
