A designer who worked on The Witcher 3 recently shared insights into the significant hurdles encountered during the game’s development, specifically regarding its non-player character (NPC) simulation. The primary challenge, according to the designer, was persuading players that the vibrant, dynamic lives of the NPCs were a result of genuine, deep-seated simulations rather than mere superficial scripting or an illusion of reality.

The developer noted that today’s gaming audience pays close attention to such underlying mechanics, a level of scrutiny that considerably complicated their efforts to establish the authenticity of the NPC behaviors. This intense player focus on detailed simulation made the process particularly demanding for the team. In a separate observation, the designer also highlighted advancements in game creation by mentioning that building a small village environment, akin to those found in The Witcher 3 and featuring multiple houses, is now a task they could complete in roughly two hours.
