Following a successful rebrand earlier this year, the atmosphere surrounding Blizzard’s hero shooter, Overwatch, has seen a significant upswing. Associate game director Alec Dawson recently discussed this renewed positivity at BlizzCon, attributing the game’s recent success to a fundamental shift in development philosophy.
According to Dawson, much of the improvement comes from developers letting go of past hesitations to modify fundamental game mechanics. A prime example given is the introduction of a new Perk system, which fundamentally redefines how hero capabilities operate within the game. This willingness to evolve core systems is also coupled with the team’s commitment to delivering an extensive, year-long narrative experience for players.
